TOCAN Quarterly (March 24, 2026)

Meeting Objective: To connect as a group, discuss navigating 2026 as an election year, and share information on training opportunities.

  • Future of LGCAP: No additional funding is planned, prompting concern from local governments and discussion on next steps for advocacy.
  • Challenges of advancing climate initiatives during a local government election year, emphasizing strategic timing, maintaining momentum before June, and reframing climate action as fiscal responsibility.
  • Need to consider growing politicization of climate topics (e.g., ZCSC) and the importance of understanding senior management’s risk tolerance when bringing forward sensitive initiatives.
  • Training programs from the University of Waterloo, Simon Fraser University, and relationship-building workshops by Gwen Bridge were discussed.
  • Another round of CEA’s adaptation cohort program is expected soon, aimed at helping communities collaboratively build resilience projects, with five regional organizations already expressing interest.
