National whole-building life cycle assessment practitioner’s guide
A National Research Council Canada publication that provides standardized guidance for assessing and reporting the embodied carbon of buildings in Canada. The guide is specifically intended to support compliance reporting for embodied-carbon requirements in Canadian building construction.
Reducing Embodied Carbon in Canada’s Buildings
This white paper provides a summary of the inaugural National Embodied Carbon Summit, held on June 4, 2024 and hosted by the Canada Green Building Council (CAGBC). The Summit brought together a diverse group of over 60 professionals committed to advancing sustainable building practices through embodied carbon reductions. Summit participants engaged in insightful discussions around embodied carbon reductions, identifying the highest-priority gaps and barriers, proposing solutions, and outlining the next steps for continued collaboration.
Low-carbon assets through life cycle assessment initiative
Summary of the low-carbon assets through life cycle assessment (LCA2) initiative, which developed important outputs between 2019 and 2023 that created a science-based approach to support the selection of materials and designs that offer the lowest carbon footprint while considering the total cost of ownership.
Led by the National Research Council (NRC) and managed collaboratively by the NRC’s Energy, Mining and Environment Research Centre and the Construction Research Centre, this initiative directly supported and impacted a number of Government of Canada initiatives, commitments and government priorities. A steering committee, formed from consortium members, provided strategic direction and ensured outputs were aligned with the needs of design, engineering, and procurement professionals.
Strategies for low carbon concrete: primer for federal government procurement
A National Research Council Canada (NRC) technical report intended to help federal procurement and construction decision-makers reduce the carbon impact of concrete used in buildings and infrastructure.
Embodied Emissions Guide
The Community Energy Association is working with The District of Squamish, the Resort Municipality of Whistler and Squamish Nation to create an Embodied Emissions Guide for BC Municipalities. This guide will be a valuable resource for local governments to increase awareness, inform decisions and collaborate toward reducing embodied carbon emissions. The focus is on buildings, particularly Part 9/Part 3 construction. This website summarizes the phases of the guide’s development.
